Asbestos is the generic term for a wide range of naturally occurring minerals that crystallise to form long thin fibres and fibre bundles.

Most common is the serpentine group, which includes chrysotile (white asbestos) and which has been the most frequently mined.

A second asbestos group known as the amphiboles includes crocidolite (blue asbestos) and amosite (brown asbestos).

asbestos surveysThe BBC have reported that a fire at an allotments site in Northamptonshire may have released asbestos dust in to the atmosphere. People living around Irthlingborough Road in Finedon are being advised by firefighters to keep doors and windows shut until further notice.Smoke from a bonfire of waste building materials may have put asbestos dust in the air, a fire service spokesman said. Emergency crews including a specialist decontamination unit were called to tackle the fire.

The idea is that these technical bulletins are planned to have the same status as ALG memos do for the contractors; once it’s in their UKAS expect you to abide by it until such time as it goes into the updated guidance.

asbestos workersThe death of an antiques dealer has been blamed on asbestos, after he breathed in the material when he worked down a coal mine earlier in his life.

Michael Hallam, 72, of Hartshorne, died at his home earlier this year, and a coroner’s inquiry has recorded a death by industrial disease, reports the Burton Mail.
