asbestos workersThe death of an antiques dealer has been blamed on asbestos, after he breathed in the material when he worked down a coal mine earlier in his life.

Michael Hallam, 72, of Hartshorne, died at his home earlier this year, and a coroner’s inquiry has recorded a death by industrial disease, reports the Burton Mail.

Mr Hallam left school in 1952 to work at Granville Colliery, spending the first two years of his employment on the surface and carrying out boiler duties.

Dr Ivan Robinson, who carried out a post mortem on Mr Hallam, said: “We found a tumour through the right side of his lung and small deposits of a tumour on the left side, in the heart and liver, but predominately in the right lung.”

His son, Andrew Hallam, added that towards the end of his life, Mr Hallam could hardly breathe or move and commented that the asbestos-related mesothelioma had caused his downfall.

Earlier this week, the Health and Safety Executive issued a new factsheet which is designed to protect customers, workers and contractors from the dangers of asbestos.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19787220-ADNFCR
