Carlisle College revamp

asbestos removalAsbestos experts will move in next week as work moves forward on a £9 million transformation of Carlisle College. Specialists will remove the substance as a demolition project of the old building continues.

The experts are being brought in after a detailed Asbestos survey of the building found the presence of asbestos. Work is taking part to complete the second phase of a scheme to revamp the city centre college.

The first saw the building of a new wing, which fronts onto Victoria Place. The second will see the rebuilding of old wings of the building, which date back 50 years.

A two-storey structure will now be created with a glazed atrium along Strand Road and a main entrance facing Compton Street. This will house a catering kitchen and training restaurant, a cafe/student hub, welcome space, student shop, and salons for hair and beauty students. There will also be a facility for students with learning difficulties and general teaching accommodation.

While the scheme replaces the college’s oldest structures, it retains the 1970s building north of Strand Road as an administration block. This will be refurbished and the bridge linking it to the rest of the campus re-clad. A campus garden and car park off Hartington Street will also be created as part of the project.
