Edinburgh Arts centre in asbestos nightmare

The Edinburgh Evening News have reported that a community arts centre has been forced to seal off its basement after asbestos was found around several pipes.

Craigmillar Community Arts on Newcraighall Road has used the basement for storage for several years, with staff going in and out to retrieve equipment. And concerns have been raised that the asbestos has been exposed for several years.

‘Asbestos: The survey guide’ (Ref: HSG264) which was published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in January is aimed at those who commission asbestos surveys, the surveyors who carry them out and those who use them such as architects and demolition or removal contractors.

Interserve Defence Ltd, based at the Defence Storage and Distribution Centre, Arncott, has admitted three charges of failing to comply with the control of asbestos at work regulation between May 2005 and September 2006.

court case asbestosA Teesside engineering firm where two workers were potentially exposed to asbestos fibres was yesterday fined a total of £3,000 for failing to protect their employees.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Darchem Engineering Ltd, which is registered at 6 Queen’s Road, Aberdeen. The company pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations 10(1) and 4(3) of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 at Teesside Magistrates Court.
