THE asbestos timebomb has claimed another victim – a North Yorkshire man believed to have been exposed to the deadly dust more than 30 years ago.
An inquest was told Sydney Cutsforth, of Beechwood Grove, Sherburn-in-Elmet, died on September 30 last year in St Leonard’s Hospice, York, at the age of 64.

I regularly deliver Asbestos Awareness training to construction industry seniors and I am often surprised by the lack of basic knowledge of Asbestos so I have noted below the key facts!
Asbestos is a mineral fibre, which is mined from the ground and is naturally occuring. It is almost indestructible and has the properties to resist heat and acids. Two million fibres can fit on a pin head and 15 million miles of fibre in a cubic inch.

Further to attending the Kent2020 Event held in Detling (Near Maidstone) I walked around the 350+ exhibitors and mingled with a few celebs David Grant (Fame Academy) and Nick Hewer (Apprentice) to name two, i found myself starting to take a straw poll when it come to discussing Asbestos and these attendees managed it within their workplaces i also asked about their knowledge regarding the new HSG264 Asbestos Surveyors Guide.
Worryingly I wasn’t surprised to discover that most people are utterly unaware of any changes to guidance and on occasion I heard comments showing their ignorance to their obligations as a Dutyholder and had neither an Asbestos Survey nor an Asbestos Management Plan had every been carried out. It really was an eye opener to me and the HSE Inspectors would have had a field day had they been a fly on the wall…
